Contamination Control

NewsDesk Release
10 June 2011

Contamination control is any activity attempting to control the existence, growth and proliferation of contamination within a certain area. It can be either atmospheric or on surfaces.
The purpose of contamination control is to ensure an adequate and consistent level of cleanliness in maintained and controlled within an environments.
Today’s machines are designed to be less tolerant of fluid contamination. That’s why is so critical that proper contamination control measures are taken. Some of the advantages of using contamination control methods in engines and machinery include the improvement of engine performance, reliability and the overall improvement customer satisfaction of engines and machinery.
It is essential for companies to ensure that fuels and lubricants used in their operations are clean, due to the complexity and cost of modern capital equipment. Cleanliness can prevent or reduce component failure, reduce downtime and minimise the cost of repairs.

When testing for contamination control it is important to check the injector nozzle (high pressure increases contamination level). This can cause eroding of the orifices and ultimately result in incomplete atomization of fuel and overfueling. Contaminants also cause hard starts within the engine which as a result cause greater emissions), injector plungers/barrels (abrasive particles can cause wear between the injector’s plunger and the barrel. They can also scuff metal surfaces which can cause injector seizure) as well as the control valve (contaminates can cause damage to the valves that control the overall fuel pressure. This erodes mating parts of the valves. Excessive wear on these parts can cause leaks and eventual causes loss in the overall engine power).

Filtrations systems can be used to filter out contaminates that develop within oil, fuel or other fluids within an engine. This is a simple but effective method of controlling contamination that is cost and time effective.
Techenomics is a local lubrication and condition monitoring specialist operating throughout Australia, Asia and in Madagascar. Techenomics’ filtration services aid companies with the design and installation of a range of fuel and oil filtration solutions. Techenomics can provide comprehensive condition monitoring and contamination control audits which are used to develop and implement operational practises. These practices deliver clean fuels and oils to production processes. An added advantage of these processes is the fact that they actually provide and contribute towards an environmentally friendly workplace.
